TAEGUKGI

SYNOPSIS

         This film delves into the bond between two innocent brothers who are sent into battle against their wills. The elder, Yi Jin-tae (Jang Dong-gun), owned a shoeshine in Seoul before the start of the war. His younger brother, Yi Jin-seok (Won Bin), is a bright young student who wants to attend college.

The story begins with the South Korean Army digging up remains at a once Korean War battlefield to put a memorial site there. While they dig Old Jin-Seok is called by the Army to come find the remains of his brother who had been found. Preparing, he finds a set of shoes that emoitionaly breaks him down and the movie transfers back in time. The movie then starts in Seoul where Jin Tae was shoe shining until his brother brings him to a store that selled expensive shoes that he wanted. Jin Tae then gives him a pen and buys ice cream and runs to a tram laughing with Jin Seok.

Not long after the North Korean invasion on 25 June 1950, Jin Seok is drafted into the South Korean army, in an attempt to save him, Jin Tae is also drafted into the ROK army and sent to the frontline. Jin-tae, wanting to spare his brother's life, makes a deal with his superior. If he can earn a "Taegeuk Medal" — the highest honour for a South Korean soldier, his younger brother (Jin Seok) will be discharged from the army.

To win this medal, Jin-tae willingly takes on all sorts of sucidal missions ( including single handedly charging a machine gun nest). He finally earns it by capturing a North Korean commander alive, but at the cost of good friend Yong Man's life. Jin-seok, who is not aware of his brother's intentions to save him, starts to question Jin-tae's morality. At the same time, the formerly gentle Jin-tae has become cold-blooded through having killed so many people.

      -finally nkapanod na din aku ng movie ni jang dong-gun. well, i know he's an a-list star in korea so i just wanna see his works. i wanna watch all about eve sometime soon cuz andun din sya and ksama nya c chae-rim. it was shown a long time ago sa channel 7. actually, mtgal na ung series na un, around 2000 pa sya tlga pnalabas sa korea. i noticed, d msyadong korean looking c jang dong-gun cuz he has bigger eyes. nwys, back to taegukgi, andun dn c....won bin!! namiss ko sya. npanod ko lang sya sa autumn in my heart and aside from that wala na...im not sure but ive read he was already discharged from the army. for me, taegukgi's a typical war movie. reminds me of saving private ryan and the likes.. melodramatic dn ung story cuz it's about two brothers and it highlights the elder brother Jin-tae's (jang dong-gun) struggle to have a medal para mapauwi na c jin-seok (won bin). student pa lang c jin-seok and sya ung inaasahan ng family. so c jin-tae, he does his best to protect his brother. so sumama sya sa lhat ng risky missions to earn a medal--to discharge his brother from the war and his desire to be a hero nrin. so dun na ngkaron ng conflict--time came when jin-tae became unhuman. he was so determined to get the medal that he doesnt use his heart anymore. well, watch d film and see what i mean. Super bagay kay won-bin ung role nya d2. wonbin has that innocent boyish looks which really works 4 his role in this flick. he was first seen as a kind-hearted and gentle young guy who's really close to his family, specially his brother. he doesnt know anything about war so you could feel na he was really scared. As the movie progresses, he was also developed to be a strong and brave man. wala na sya sa army nun and ngpapagaling na when he went out of his way to save his brother. eh nung time na un, communist na c jin-tae so he risked his life para ma-save c jin-tae. after nun...hay, yoko na kwen2 cuz im goin to be sad lang. bsta nkakaiyak eh. uhm, and2 dn pala c lee eun-joo..nung nabubuhay pa sya. she committed suicide early this year yata or late last year. she plays the fiance of jin-tae.according sa news, depression ung cause ng suicide. sayang nman sya, promising pa nman pro gnon nangyari. nwys, taegukgi's worth watching cuz aside from historical ung movie, it shows how far someone could go for protecting your brother...or anyone that's close to your heart. i remember when i was young, i read the story of hansel and gretel, i was scared for me and my brother. eh kc im elder so i feel more responsible. i was thinking, panu kung maligaw kme tpos kidnappin kme ng witch? tpos balak pa kme lutuin panu na? mga gnon ba. but now he's bigger than me so.... heheh.
