Briefly:
A love story between a young man who has been forced to grow up too quickly, and a young woman with an ailment that has placed restrictions on her life. Natsuo (Domoto Tsuyoshi) has been looking after his younger brother and sister since the death of their parents. He has also been running the family bicycle shop. Yuki (Hirosue Ryoko) becomes the only person in the world in whom he can confide. For Yuki, Natsuo becomes the catalyst that has her trying to break out of her cocoon.
Now, i really dont want to look like im having a book report here or something... but i have a lot in mind about this affectious drama that il just organize my thoughts this way...my reviews always contain the spoilers cuz as you can see it's really long...dont read if you plan to watch this. And i hope you would see this drama cuz it's really worth it...
Character analysis:
Natsuo - the eldest among the three Shinoda siblings, alongside with Jun nichan and Chika. He stood as the breadwinner since their parents died.
Jun - brother of Natsuo who acquired a hearing problem since he was a kid due to an accident. He was relying on his hearing aid. Natsuo blamed himself for Jun's disability, saying if he had not left him in the park, Jun wouldnt fall off the swing...but Jun didnt have any hard feelings on his brother. I really admire Jun's heart of gold. He never took his hearing disability as a hindrance on what he wants....and though Natsuo once rejected his idea to take education as his major, he didnt give up and showed them that he could carry on. Natsuo, seeing his persistence, finally agreed...realizing that Jun's strong will is what matters most....
Chika - Natsuo and Jun's sister. At 17, she acts like the mother in the house. She manages the money, food and other household things...Unfortunately, Hiroto got her pregnant....they decided for abortion but Hiroto constantly fails to have money for the operation. They told Natsuo and Jun the truth and Natsuo was fuming with anger. He agreed of the abortion but Chika wanted to keep the baby. Later on, having volunteered of looking after sick children like Yukari-chan in the hospital, made him realize that life is the most precious gift one can have...thus, he relented on chika raising the baby.
Hiroto - the "freeloader" as what Natsuo calls him...hehehe! a friend of the Shinodas and boyfriend of Chika. He was a lazy guy who did nothing but to cut classes and go to arcades....has a family problem and things got worse for him when Chika told him she's pregnant...He was also involved in a gang of teenagers who uses motorcycles to snatch money. He gave in to it once so he could provide money for the abortion. His conscience got ahead of him and he failed to do it. He left home and headed to Natsuo's place. He was accepted to live with them as long as he helps in the cycle shop. He became more responsible each day and lives happily with Natsuo, chika and Jun....
Yuki - a simple, young and beautiful woman who works in a bank. She's also a volunteer in the hospital who takes care of sick children. She used to be timid and shy....but when Natsuo came into her life, she became more interested in the world around her. Natsuo told her about the summer snow...the marine snow found under the deep blue ocean....he said he wanted to see it in summer cuz snow is normal in winter. Yuki told him she wanted to see it with him...From there, the bittersweet lovestory blossomed between them...really made me smile and gripped my heart all throughout....
COMMENT:
I totally love this drama! definitely a tearjerker though it has humorous moments once in a while....very touching and well written....the cast did a great job, very natural that it made the story very heartwarming....i love to see how the siblings look out for one another and the nicest thing here is how they brought up the family values...and most specially, this is an eye-opener for appreciating every minute of your life. *weeps* Yuki made me feel sad a lot of times...though she knew she was sick, she has a positive aura...she knew she could endure anything with Natsuo on her side, but breaks down whenever she was discouraged to be with him...her smile displays a lot of hope for someone who only has a few time left...the ending just ruined it for me big time! i love Natsuo's character so much that letting him die is so utterly mean and painful. Until now, it gets into me..he was such a good brother, very funny guy, a real inspiration to Yuki and then he would just....what? die??! huhuhu.... but i guess that's the morale of the story... Love can do wonders and miracles..Natsuo is yuki's miracle cuz she has his heart...he promised he would always be beside her and this is his way of proving it...but then, i kinda find the way Natsuo died very ridiculous.... There was a scene where he was hit by a motorcycle while saving a kid who was biking...the thought of him dying with that appeared to me and he probably would then give his heart to Yuki. But i dismissed the idea cuz the mtorcycle lterally didnt look like it would create a big damage! another thing, it was still about 11 feet away from him but he just froze there in the middle of the street covering the kid... sheesh, he still had time to roll over the sidewalk for safety! besides, he even visited Yuki often times after the operation. One time, Yuki saw the wound in his arm but he explained that he was just hit. ..Yuki was so happy and excited to go out the hospital and do a lot of things with Natsuo....She wanted to go diving, ride the rollercoaster, run as far as she could without getting tired...she anticipated her new life with Natsuo. That scene was in the hospital room and Yuki was making tea for them...She was saying how she was looking forward for all these things now that she's well....this scene left an unbelievable pain in my heart....Natsuo said that he'll always be beside her....always. But i saw sadness in his eyes and that's when the twist hit me...When Yuki turned around, he was gone.... I remember she told him earlier that she dreamt of him during the operation. She wasnt scared because in her dream, she was holding his hands and they were diving together...After a month when she was finally discharged from the hospital, she went to Natsuo's place. She didnt find him there and asked Jun, Hiroto and Chika where he is...then, they explained to her that Natsuo died a month ago while he was on his way to visit her in the hospital...He died immediately and they knew he would have wanted to give his heart to her....
Seiji-san always tells Natsuo that Yuki needed someone like him, a doctor who can protect her from her illness...so if he really cares, he would let her go...but in the end it was Natsuo who saved her.....overall, this drama would really touch you deep inside...It tackles a lot of issues like teen pregnancy, juvenile deliquency, dealing with illness, encouragement, hope and everlasting love that would inspire you to appreciate life and live each moment in happiness...
Natsuo's death opened a new life for Yuki....wow, Ryoko (Yuki) is a great actress....her character will really move you... you can really feel when she's happy, specially when she flashes that shy but sincere, innocent smile she made me teary-eyed a lot of times though.... when she decided to let yukari go through the operation instead of her....when her dad discourages her of goin out with Natsuo, and all those times she felt alone and depressed when Natsuo isnt around to make her smile and remind her that everyday is worth living...
Recommendation :
this drama is just superb! wonderfully striking....i know ive already described a lot of times how i love this series but i just couldnt help myself. This ive got to say, is truly the most touching drama ive ever seen so far! Natsuo Shinoda isnt the typical rich handsome type of guy you see in kdramas but it's impossible that you wouldnt fall for his charm...i love his relationship with his siblings....he was so caring, lively, affectious and comical! and though at times he's stubborn and stern, he knows when to draw the line and still gets a way to patch things up with them... they live a very simple life yet they were happy and harmonious...it was such a great sight to see. He was just 21 but he's the big and strong wall his brother and sister depends on...the plot and ending may be common but it was nicely done in a way that it would really get through you. The whole cast really did great, very convincing.... lovable characters that made the story interesting and a nice thing to watch.... this drama makes me wanna see the summer snow too.... =) The ending may be tragic and will really make you feel oh so-sad but it's a self-realization on how to appreciate life...doing the best that you can while you still have it...a truly beautiful and inspiring drama that would leave a special place in your heart...
OST: Summer Snow
Artist: Zamfir
It's summer snow in the deep blue sea
I try to touch but it fades away
It must be a dream I will never get
Just like my love that's crying for you
If there were something not to change forever
We could feel it deep in our heart
Today is over with a million tears
Still everyone has a wish to live
Oh I do believe everlasting love
And destiny to meet you again
I feel a pain I can hardly stand
All I can do is loving you
It's summer snow in the deep blue sea
I try to touch but it fades away
It must be a dream I will never get
Just like my love that's crying for you
